MSITU WETU

A documentary film about community-based forest conservation in Tanzania

Msitu Wetu means "our forest" in Swahili and it is the name of our upcoming film about community-based forest conservation in the Eastern Arc Forests of Tanzania. These forests are incredibly important for their biological diversity and for the livelihoods of many Tanzanians, and yet are understudied, undervalued, and practically unknown to the rest of the world. Msitu Wetu is our answer to this silence.

We are a team of Yale University students partnering with Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG) in an effort to raise the profile of social and environmental issues surrounding forest conservation in Tanzania. Msitu Wetu will give a voice to the communities of the Eastern Arc and, through their stories, illustrate the challenges and achievements of forest conservation in Tanzania.

The film is aimed at a Tanzanian as well as an international audience and will be produced in both Swahili and English. The Swahili version of Msitu Wetu will be broadcast through Tanzanian media services and at community screenings as part of Tanzania Forest Conservation Group's Environmental Education program. The film will also be screened at the African Rainforest Conservancy Gala in New York City and at Yale University, as well as broadcast more widely through online media.
